What's 3D TV?

A 3D TV is a television that displays content in manner where it appears to be three dimensional. Today's 3D TVs work differently than the 3D you see in the movie theaters. Most TV manufacturers have standardized on active shutter glasses which is using an approach called Alternate Frame Sequencing. This approach involves wearing glasses that synchronize with the TV and alternate which eye can watch the content as the TV alternates the content for each frame.

How Does 3D TV Work?

how does 3d tv workThe way 3D works for television is that the TV screen refreshes the picture at a rate faster than the eye can detect. This is currently how TVs work so nothing new yet.

The new part is with 3D TVs, the TV alternates images as it refreshes. One image for the right eye, one for the left eye, one for the right, one for the left, etc. These images are slightly offset tricking the brain into thinking it is viewing a 3D image.

Now the key part, if you were to watch this without 3D glasses the picture would appear fuzzy because you would see both images. The active shutter glasses synchronize with the TV and block out images for each eye. So when the image for the right eye is displayed the glasses block the left eye. And when the image for the left eye is displayed the glasses block the image for the right eye. And on and on. This happens really fast and tricks the brain into thinking it is seeing a 3D image. It works very well compared to some of the grainy 3D movies you may have seen in movie theaters a few years ago.
